In this article, we analyze the scope of public policies aimed at assisting immigrants in the municipality of Pacaraima, a border region that receives many permanent and transit immigrants. We present a view of the local public authorities on the topic, based on the legal framework of Law No. 13,445/2017 (New Migration Law), which governs migration policy and implies immigrants’ access to public policies, as well as the experiences experienced by the municipality since 2015 to date, with the mass immigration of Venezuelans due to a political, social and economic crisis in their country. We carried out a documentary bibliographical investigation for the theoretical basis, and present the history of legislation that deals with the topic. Next, an open interview was carried out with the municipal manager with the aim of learning about the activities developed by the municipality for immigrants, and their future perspectives; and also, collect information about legal and structural apparatuses aimed at immigrants, as forms of expression of local politics. We observe that when the public sector proves to be inefficient in meeting the demands presented to it, chaos ensues with a humanitarian crisis in the region. However, this article also presents some positive indirect effects of Venezuelan immigration on the performance of economic activity in the state of Roraima, demonstrating that immigration brought benefits to the region such as increased consumption of goods and services, and growth in local economy.
