In this article, the authors want to illustrate how Austria was and still is responding to the “refugee crisis” last year. The article is considered as a kind of mosaic containing different viewpoints, which highlight the personal interests, engagements and theoretical approaches of the authors. The first section presents a short overview about migration history in Austria from 1900 until nowadays – with a special focus on Vienna. In the following section Anne Unterwurzacher reflects her time as volunteer during the time of the refugee movement. She describes some of her experiences with the intention to illustrate ongoing developments and challenges in Europe. In the section “This waiting makes my crazy” Ethel Kosminsky describes a visit in a provisional refugee shelter. She sheds light on some aspects of the everyday of the refugees living in such a place. In the last section the topic will be approached from a different angle: On the basis of an actual research project Katharina Auer-Voigtlaender highlights the process of inclusion of refugees in smaller communities.
