Abstract

The pandemic resulting from the new coronavirus raised different issues that became the subject of discussions carried out not only by specialists, but also by different areas of society. Among these issues, the debate involving health and economics was present as one of the core of the discussions on the measures and the respective parameters to be adopted to contain the advancement of COVID-19. In times when these two areas have gained not only new looks, but also different views of those already inserted in these media, a historical revisitation is an opportunity to reflect on debates that go through different eras and that are far from over. To this end, we chose to address a context in which the health and economic spheres have also made a significant opposition, directly influencing the lives of the migrant population. The context chosen was the Court of Rio de Janeiro in the second half of the 19th century and as an object three inns of immigrants, aiming at discussing how the creation of these places of reception to immigrants was part not only of a complex network of the immigration process, but also of transformations in the structures of the Brazilian economy and public hygiene.
