This article addresses themes concerning gypsy groups located in Rio de Janeiro. Using oral history approaches, it seeks to re-qualify the gypsy culture values of Rom and Calon as filtered by two iconic characters, Mio Vacite and Ramona Torres. The examination of these interviews, in turn, leads to an understanding of the performances of identity and gender and the alleged group memory, which allows us to see the strategies of internal and external coexistence, conditions which emphasize factors that emerge from supposed tradition when confronted with modernity. Artistic manifestations are highlighted as analytical means which, in the end, reveal original and diverse positions present in complementary cultural spaces.
