One of the consequences of migration is the separation of families. For they achieve their right to family and family life, immigrants and refugees must have their right to family reunification recognized by States. This article analyzes the consolidation of the concept and practices that involve the right to family reunification considering the work of Abdelmalek Sayad. With a theoretical framework based on the ideas and concepts of Sayad, we analyze primary and secondary sources to understand the presence and development of the right to family reunification in Brazil. At the international level, there is a possibility of recognizing the right to family reunification as an implicit right in the right to family and explicitly in the case of children. We conclude that Brazil recognizes the right to family reunification after changing the paradigm of its migratory legislation, but its definition of family does not include the different realities of the migratory journey.
